According to a well-known story in Turkey, the ambassador of Vienna to the Ottoman Empire, Ogier Ghiselin de Busbecq, saw a Turk with a tulip on his türban around a coffee house in Sultanahmet, İstanbul.
Then, he asked the Turk by pointing with his finger to the türban "what is the name of it?"
The Turk thought that the ambassador asking the name of the hat, so he said that its name was türban, and the ambassador pronounced it as tulip, but the name of the flower is lale in Turkish.
