Siwa owes its fame as the home of the Oracle of Ammon which gave the oasis its ancient name of Oasis of Amun Ra. However, the ancient Egyptians called it “Sekht-am” meaning “palm land”. Early Arab geographers called it Santariyyah. Its modern name Siwa is unclear, probably linked to the Taslhiyt Berber word asiwan, a type of bird of prey.
